Hi neha, we shop everywhere from co-ops to large chains. We try to keep the ingredients simple so that people can find them easily.

Put salt on your hands when forming the balls or the rice will stick to your hands.

This recipe didn't work out so well for me. I thought the filling was bland and I had a hard time getting the rice to stick together. Love most of your other stuff. Thanks anyway!

Hi Anonymous — We're sorry this didn't work out so well. We tried making the recipe again to improve it, and we noticed that adding a bit of salt to the rice enhances the flavor quite a bit.

As for the rice not sticking together, did you mix the vinegar in prior to cooking the rice? Rice vinegar is what makes the rice sticky. Also, be sure to use a short grain rice. The shorter the grain the better they will stick.

I was really intimidated by this recipe-and I still am, haha. But I'm gonna try it this week-No, I'm gonna master it!

Oh, and I'm one of your recipe testers! Love from me to you :o)

We're not huge fans of olives. Do you have any suggestions for alternative ingredients that might work and still give a yummy overall flavor?

Hi Mad Joy,

Any stuffing in the middle will work. Simply putting an umeboshi (Japanese plum) would be flavorful and authentic. Even kimchi would work.

If you don't have access to an Asian foods store, any veggies that are chopped finely will work well in the middle of these rice balls.
