Soy sauce + marinara strikes me as strange, but also intriguing :) I'd like to munch this. Oats in Moats!

I just made this, but I subbed linguini in place of zucchini and pulverized dry tvp instead of breadcrumbs because it was what I have on hand. I will definitely be making this again and trying it with zucchini next time!

Very delicious, definitely making it again soon.

Ok, so I've never cooked meatballs before and was very excited to try this recipe. I guess I should have researched more how to cook them because mine fell apart turning my oil into a black burning mess. I salvaged most of the balls and just crumbled it up over my zucchini. The flavours were great. I did add some Italian seasons, garlic, and nooch to the mix as well. Would love to try again but any tips on how to make them properly next time?!

Hi VeggieMama, sorry to hear about your recipe.

We noticed the beans have to be mashed up very thoroughly. They are the binding ingredient, hence the most crucial. If your mixture looks too dry, add some more beans or soy sauce. You should be able to tell during step 3 if they are starting to fall apart. If so, throw them back in the bowl and adjust.

It might also help not to turn the beans over too many times in the pan, or to just be careful when doing so. We turned them over just once or twice.

Let us know if this misses the problem you were having and we'll keep the discussion going. And thanks for the feedback.

I tried these a few nights ago and they were great! I love how most of the ingredients for your recipes are items we usually already have on hand. I made this recipe for dinner and the banana cake for dessert- both were delicious and super easy! I ordered your snack book and am looking forward to the cookbook. One suggestion- start a Facebook page!!! That way you can post a link when you upload new recipes because sometimes I forget to check your blog. All of my favorite blogs have Facebook pages so it's easy to keep track of updates and new blog posts through the news feed. It's also easy to "share" with friends.

Cooked these last night after a long cycle, with cous-cous to the side, absolutely fantastic!

The use of soy seemed questionable but it went so well with the beanballs.

Be careful with the beanballs when you fry them, or else they'll pitter about all over the pan.

Inspiring stuff, can't wait to stretch some of the ideas to other dishes!

I made this the other night with my own twist, but the "balls" didn't hold so well. Still tasted delicious in the end. Thanks for the idea!

I just found this blog and I love it! Immediately tried this recipe because it seemed incredibly easy and I loved it. Keep up the amazing job, this blog is amazing for those of us who have a meatless diet and no time or ingredients! Thanks for sharing.

So good! I added a few cloves of garlic to the zucchini...so, so good. My kids loved making the bean balls and devoured every bite on their plates!!!! Making the churro chips for dessert!

Love your drawings! Always trying to think of ways to mix my two favourite things: Art & Food.

These were amazing. Even my red-blooded, meat-eating boyfriend was raving about them. I was shocked at how the zucchini strips mimic spaghetti so perfectly. I also had trouble keeping the balls together, but I did a second batch and just flipped them ever-so-carefully. In the end the whole dish was freakin fantastic. This blog is a life saver, and helps me to eat less animal products every day.

Just made these and they came out DELISH! You really feel like you are eating pasta and meatballs! We didn't have any black beans so we used a mix of butter beans and chick peas. We also added some carrot, onion, garlic and parsley to the beanball mixture. Came out increds! Rock on vegan stoner!

Great recipe and great website :)

I cooked this tonight for my husband (meat eater) and he loved it! Me too, to say the least. I added whole wheat spaghetti, and because I didn't have plain oats I used maple syrup oats, but added some garlic salt and a bit more soy sauce. It was delish! Glad I found this site!

Tried this out a few noghts ago and placed everything on top of baked polenta sticks. Very cool.

Made this for dinner tonight. Yummy!!!! I added a little tvp to the bean mixture. This and your sloppy joes are out favorite recipes of yours! Just so yummy!!!

Looks delicious! What a great taste and food texture this must have, thanks!

This knocked my socks off. Husband thought these had meat in them! Delish!

I just made this for my predominantly vegetarian family and we all loved it! except for my picky, meat eating brother, of course. FREAKEN GOOD THOUGH. this was my first time using a recipe from The Vegan Stoner and I plan on makin many more

These look great but too much fat - I'm going to try to make bake them instead of frying them and see what happens.

I have a very sensitive stomach, so I did not fry them, but bake them with enough Extra Virgin Olive Oil, they are just as amazing! :) So anyone who wants to spare some fat, bake! If we love to get baked, so do they!

I made these last night and they were so easy and delicious! I steamed my zucchini and instead of marinara I used Angela's Avocado sauce [http://ohsheglows.com/2011/01/31/15-minute-creamy-avocado-pasta/] (I had avocado on hand). The Garlicy avocado sauce with the bean balls worked surprisingly well!!
I added some chili powder to the balls and that gave them even more delicious flavor, and I used about ~2 Tablespoons of coconut oil to cook the balls. So Good! Love the illustrations!

Made this tonight and loved it. Doubled the recipe for the hubby and me but even then would have liked more bean balls. They are yummy. Thanks vegan stoner!

I do not particularly care for black beans, so I substituted them with pinto beans--and like some of the other Vegan Stonerees, I baked the beanballs. The zucchini is good, but I'm pretty sure I could just eat the beanballs by themselves. Delicious.

Unknown said...

Dude... This is delicious.

Unknown said...

i just made these with garlic powder added to the beanballs. this is a great, inexpensive recipe! thank you! i am a fellow vegan blogger over at Impoverished Vegan (www.impoverishedvegan.com) and this is a wonderful recipe.

can refried beans be used instead?

The Vegan Stoner said...

Hi Anonymous,

We have not tried this recipe using refried beans, so we can't be certain that it will work. You may want to add more bread crumbs and oats if using refried beans.

If you try it let us know how it goes!

Truly amazing stuff. I've been creative with zucchini myself a few times: www.stefkestens.blogspot.be
and it still amazes me how one veggie could provide us with so many different types of recipes.

Wow, this is a really old post! Well, I'd like to report that this dish is indeed (still) very delicious. The best bean balls I've had! I can't wait to make them again with my own twists. The noodles were pretty good too, but I may be biased because it was a great excuse to try a new kitchen gadget of mine. Fast, easy and cheap.
