I'm unfamiliar with soy curls. How difficult are they to find at grocery stores?

The Vegan Stoner said...

Hi Jeffrey — First off, the soy curls in this recipe can be replaced with seitan, tofu, or even veggies. So don't let that stop you! (Just leave out the soaking/draining process.) Secondly, soy curls can either be abundant or sparse at your local grocery store, depending on where you live and what kinds of stores you frequent. Where we are, they are common even in the big chain spots. If you can't find them and really want to see what they're about, they are easy to order online and have a very long shelf life. Hope this helps — let us know if you give it a try!

Thank you for the advice. I had some leftover homemade seitan I'd been meaning to use up, and the results were phenomenal. This is certainly a recipe to hold onto. I wasn't able to locate soy curls at either my local grocery store, nor the specialty grocery store I'm in love with. I ordered some off Amazon, mostly out of curiosity, since seitan worked so well.

Jeffrey, that's awesome news! We'll be sure to try it with seitan next time. Thanks for coming back to let us know how it went.

Your blog is freaking amazing! I wish I had discovered it when I first went vegan… I kinda had pasta or rice every day cause I believed that other delicious vegan dishes were difficult, time consuming and expensive. I figured out how wrong I was after a couple of months but I'm pretty sure your blog would have made the transition a lot easier. And your illustrations are so cute and funny!

Hi Mikkel — We'd be happy to help you. Which part of the recipe is confusing?

I'm sure someone else has asked before now, but what the heck are Soy Curls?

The Vegan Stoner said...

Hi Josiah,

Soy curls are made of soy beans and are a meat replacer. They come dehydrated, to prepare you must soak them in water and then can cook them like any other meat replacer. You can find them at most natural food stores, often in a bag. Sometimes they can be found in the bulk bin section. If you're having difficulty finding them, try ordering some online. A quick google search will direct you there.

Hope this helps!
